The Crossing Places

I have just started reading Elly Griffith's The Crossing Places. So far, so very good. For someone who isn't a forensic archaeologist herself, her attention to detail and her factual accuracy is very good. Also, I find her heroine, Ruth Galloway, extremely easy to relate to! There's a work-related reason that I'm reading it actually, but I'm not going to tell you about that...yet.

    I liked The Crossing Places for the characters and the archaeology, but I thought the crime/mystery aspect was fairly poor, very predictable and formulaic. It seemed to me like Elly Griffiths wanted to write about an archaeologist and archaeology itself (her husband is an archaeologist), but thought that she needed to justify that by including a modern crime with genre staples like cat-and-mouse scare tactics and dramatic chase sequence.

    I haven't finished it yet, but, yes, I can see that it is a bit predictable. Funny - I never thought of forensic anthropology as an inherently dangerous discipline - one where I'd be in fear of my life every few months! Yet it seems that most forensic anth heroines end up victimised at some point. I like the characterisation a lot - Ruth is very easy to relate to.
